Introduction to the Case
The Pretoria North Magistrates’ Court has handed down a life imprisonment sentence to 40-year-old Dineo Cambridge Baloyi for the murder of his younger brother, Lethabo Baloyi. In addition to the life sentence, Baloyi was also sentenced to a further five years’ imprisonment for conspiracy to commit murder and was declared unfit to possess a firearm. This sentence brings closure to a case that was marked by greed, jealousy, and a brutal murder.

The Events Leading Up to the Murder
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, the deceased, Lethabo Baloyi, was employed by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and lived at the barracks, while his brother, Dineo, resided with their mother at her home in Soshanguve. Their mother, also an SANDF employee, was frequently deployed outside the country, leaving Dineo to his own devices. It was during one of these deployments that Dineo discovered his mother’s last will and testament, which revealed that he was not a beneficiary and that his younger brother stood to inherit. This discovery sparked a chain of events that would ultimately lead to the murder of Lethabo.

The Murder and Its Aftermath
Dineo shared the information about the will with his girlfriend, and the pair devised a plan to kill Lethabo. On May 30, 2018, they invited Lethabo to their mother’s residence under the guise of socializing, where they secretly laced his drink with poison. When Lethabo lost consciousness, they strangled him to death. In an attempt to cover their tracks, they placed the body in Lethabo’s vehicle and deliberately crashed it along the R80 Mabopane Highway, making it appear as though the death was the result of a motor vehicle accident. After the incident, Dineo’s girlfriend fled to Thembisa, where she has not yet been found by the police. Dineo, on the other hand, escaped to Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga, where he was later arrested for an unrelated kidnapping case.

The Investigation and Confession
While in custody for the kidnapping case, Dineo fell ill and was hospitalized in September 2024. It was during his hospitalization that he contacted his uncle and confessed to killing his brother. The investigating officer traveled to Mpumalanga, where Dineo made a formal confession before a magistrate. He was subsequently arrested for the murder on September 9, 2024. In court, Dineo pleaded guilty to the charges and asked the court to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence, citing his children as dependants. However, Regional Prosecutor Lufuno Manena opposed the request, arguing that the murder was driven by jealousy and greed, and therefore, a life sentence was fitting.

The Sentence and Its Implications
The court ultimately agreed with the prosecutor, handing down a life sentence to Dineo for the murder of his brother. The additional five-year sentence for conspiracy to commit murder and the declaration that Dineo is unfit to possess a firearm serve as a further deterrent to others who may consider committing similar crimes. The sentence brings closure to the family of Lethabo Baloyi, who can now begin to heal and move on from the tragic loss of their loved one. The case also highlights the importance of the work of the National Prosecuting Authority and the South African Police Service in bringing perpetrators of crime to justice and ensuring that they are held accountable for their actions.
