Introduction to the Disaster
The small town of Tairua, New Zealand, was hit by a devastating landslide in the early hours of the morning, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake. The landslide, which was triggered by heavy rain, caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure, and resulted in the evacuation of several families. John Drummond, a resident of the affected area, was woken by his wife after she heard screams from their neighbors in the night. Upon investigating, Drummond found his elderly neighbors in dire need of assistance, with one of them having been swept off the deck and into the mud.

The Aftermath of the Landslide
The landslide had come down both sides of the property, pushing up against the back of the house and causing significant damage to the structure. The exterior wall of the house was bowing under the pressure, and the kitchen cabinetry and fridge had been displaced. The scene was one of utter devastation, with water flowing everywhere and debris scattered all over the road. A water pipe had also burst, adding to the sheer volume of water running down the side of the mountain. The bulk of the landslide stopped on Motuhoa Rd, where a destroyed water tank and an upturned car were pulled down in the force and planted on top of the mountain of debris.

Emergency Response and Evacuation
Fire and Emergency local volunteers were quickly on the scene, assessing the damage and evacuating those in danger. Tairua Station manager Stacey Cammock was called to the emergency, but was unable to get his vehicle close enough, forcing him to wade his way into the sludge. He said the slip was still moving, with the potential to take out another house, forcing him to evacuate neighboring properties. Tony Jacobs was one of those evacuated, and described the experience as "a state of shock". He was woken at 1am by a firefighter with a torch shining down his hall, and was told to get out immediately.

Community Response and Support
Despite the trauma and disruption caused by the landslide, the community has come together to support those affected. Neighbors have been helping each other with the cleanup, and local authorities have been providing aid and assistance. Tony Jacobs praised the Motuhoa Rd community and local authorities for looking after them "fabulously". John Drummond echoed this sentiment, expressing his gratitude for living in a small community that looks after each other. The community’s resilience and gratitude in the face of disaster are a testament to the strength and solidarity of the people of Tairua.

Recovery and Reconstruction
The full extent of the damage and the timeline for recovery are still unclear. Several houses in Tairua are being assessed and are likely to be red-stickered, meaning they are deemed uninhabitable. It is unclear when the landslide will be able to be removed, and what it will mean for the neighboring and blocked-off residents. However, for now, the community is focused on supporting each other and rebuilding their lives. As Tony Jacobs said, he is looking forward to staying in his own bed and watching the tennis, a small comfort in the face of disaster. The people of Tairua will undoubtedly face challenges in the days and weeks ahead, but with their community spirit and support for each other, they will rebuild and recover.
