Swalwell Announces Bid for California Governorship

Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell announced Thursday that he will enter the race for California governor, joining a crowded field of candidates seeking to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Swalwell, a longtime opponent of President Donald Trump, announced his candidacy on his campaign website shortly before his appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

“I came here tonight, Jimmy, to tell you and your audience that I am running to be the next governor of California,” Swalwell said.

“I will be California’s fighter and protector,” Swalwell said in a statement on his website. “Our state is under attack. The President has militarized our streets, canceled cancer research, killed clean energy climate projects and is persecuting our immigrant friends and neighbors through their workplaces, children’s schools and places of worship.”

No clear leader has yet taken the lead in the primaries. Swalwell’s entry marks the latest twist in a race that has remained in constant flux, as politicians refuse to run, drop out or find their campaigns marred by controversy.
